Part 6: General Liability
Commercial General Liability (CGL) coverage can be thought of as the foundation to your assisted living liability policy. These coverages can be found in almost every insurance policy, for every industry. General Liability coverage is widely considered to be the broadest of all standard liability forms.
It is important to note that a CGL policy specifically excludes coverage for claims arising out of professional services, which is the primary reason most standard companies will not write an assisted living exposure. Professional liability is written through companies specializing in that particular industry, which is one of many reasons you need to work with an assisted living insurance specialist. More information on Professional Liability coverage can be found here.
The CGL policy is typically used to provide commercial enterprises with premises and operations liability coverage, products and completed operations coverage, and personal injury coverage. Medical payments coverage is usually included as well.
Here is an example of a typical assisted living General Liability proposal:
Aggregate Limit of Liability $3,000,000
Each Claim $1,000,000
Products/Completed Operations $3,000,000
Advertising/Personal Injury $1,000,000
Fire Damage Legal Liability $ 50,000 (Any one fire)
Medical Payments (Guests Only) $ 5,000 per incident
You’ll notice that, similar to the Professional Liability coverage discussed in a previous blog, General Liability is a broken down into a limit per claim, and a general aggregate limit. Due to the nature of the assisted living industry, General Liability coverage is typically very inexpensive since most claims are filed against the Professional Liability portion of the policy.
